Autoimmune Diseases and Diet
Is there a diet I should be on?
According to a study published in the Rheumatology journal, vegan diets that are also free from gluten could have a positive effect on symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Does this information make you want to eat differently?
When diet change is suggested it can be devastating news to many people. Twenty-five years ago when I was told I should give up gluten I didn’t handle that suggestion very well!
I still find it hard, and at stressful times in my life, I crave my comfort food. I have learnt to make most of the food (such as pizza, bread, pastries), myself now and that does help my cravings!
Living a certain way and going out socially and finding ‘salad’ is the only thing on the menu that looks safe, can be difficult. My flares are more difficult though. A meal out may last a few hours, but my flares can last days or weeks. I have found out the hard way that the food I craved wasn’t worth it! I can always go home and eat the tub of homemade rum and raisin dairy-free ice cream rather than risk the vanilla (full of dairy) ice cream at the restaurant.
It’s not easy to make a change in your diet.
It can be worth it though.
If you do decide to look at diet and your autoimmune disease then reach out to a Health Coach such as myself or a Nutritionist or your Doctor. It is not recommended that you make changes without guidance.
I hope you have enjoyed this information. Until next time!
