Autoimmune and Our Gut Firewalls
Autoimmune and Our Gut Firewalls
Did you know our gut has defences, or firewalls, that help it properly do its job?
These include:
GASTRO ASSOCIATED LYMPHOID TISSUE (GALT)
This is the gut’s immune system and, in fact, 70% of our entire immune system.
TIGHT JUNCTIONS
These are small proteins that are responsible for holding the gut’s cells together.
MUCOSAL IgA
It is otherwise known as immunoglobulin A and is the antibody considered our first line of defence against toxins.
FRIENDLY BACTERIA
As we mentioned, we have more bacteria in our bodies than we do in our own cells. The bacteria can communicate with the GALT, warning it of potential danger.
STOMACH ACID
This is essential for the digestion and absorption of nutrients.
All of these barriers together combine to promote a healthy gut and, in turn, healthy immunity.
Something to think about next time you are eating! Our bodies really are amazing.
I hope you have enjoyed this information. Until next time!
