What's for dinner?
What's for dinner?
As you walk up the aisle of the supermarket do you ever consider what is in the food you are purchasing?
I first started looking at labels over 25 years ago when I was diagnosed as a coeliac. Gluten-free was not a label you found on the products then, and the UK coeliac society sent a book out of gluten-free foods to members each year, which they then updated regularly. I would sit each Saturday morning adding in and crossing out food I could no longer consume. We were recommended to check the ingredients anyway and I still do today.
I love this quote from Michael Pollan
“Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.” Michael Pollan
I believe my great grandmother would both be delighted and shocked at modern supermarkets! Delighted because of how easy it has made our daily lives in providing foods for ourselves, family and friends. Shocked at the amount and the diversity available.
When I speak to clients about food, one suggestion I often have is to take a week looking at the products you purchase. Ask yourself these questions:
How many ingredients does it contain?
Do you recognise all of the ingredients?
Are you aware of how much salt it contains?
How much sugar does it contain?
How healthy is it for you?
The week can prove quite enlightening.
So what’s for dinner? Do you know what ingredients are in the items you are consuming?
I hope you have enjoyed this information. Until next time!
