Mindfulness
What does this mean to you?
Mindfulness has been defined by many throughout history. No matter what definition you connect with, there is always a common thread or pattern amongst the various meanings. Mindful.org says that ‘Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.’
How we begin our morning can set the tone for the entire day. Here are some techniques to incorporate into your morning routine to promote mindfulness.
Try waking up a little earlier. A few extra minutes can allow you to enjoy your morning rather than rush around getting ready. Before jumping out of bed, take a moment to immerse yourself in feelings of gratitude and list three things you’re thankful for. Next, take a few moments to focus on your breathing. Just ten minutes a day of focusing on your breath can tremendously reduce stress and promote relaxation.
If you don’t already make your bed in the morning, start. It sets the tone for accomplishing tasks throughout the rest of your day. If showering is part of your morning ritual, rather than washing on autopilot, take the time to practice mindfulness. Treat yourself to a few extra seconds of a scalp massage as you shampoo your hair, and apply your moisturizer with gentle care instead of just slathering it on.
Finally, as you sit down for your morning coffee or breakfast, rather than overwhelming yourself with information, like checking your email or turning on the television, choose to read an uplifting, inspiring, or positive article or quote instead. I guarantee after a few days this ritual will become more natural and you will soon find you complete other tasks with the same mindful intention.
